CANOE (KAYAK) POLO

Canoe Polo Canoe Polo is an exciting team sport played in specially designed kayaks involving 2 teams of 5 players attempting to shoot a standard water polo ball into the opponent's net which is hanging 2 meters above the water surface.

The standard pitch dimensions are usually 35 meters long by 23 meters wide. Each player is required to wear protective equipment consisting of an extra thick PFD and a helmet featuring a full face mask to protect their face against accidental paddle strikes.

Edmonton Whitewater Paddlers was the first Canadian club to play this relatively new sport, and has been supplying the bulk of the National Team members since the first World Championships in 1994, and has since hosted many multiple international competitions including the 2008 World Championships.

EWP offers its members the opportunity to get involved in this exciting sport at any level from junior and novice, recreational or competitive. The club hosts multiple tournaments during the year and all members are invited to participate in these very social events.

Our members can use canoe polo boats from our extensive stock of boats for a modest "repair fee" if they do not have their own polo boat.

Please check out the Canoe Polo forum for upcoming clinics, drop-in games and tournaments, also of interest for youngsters who wish to participate in the next Alberta Summer Games

SLALOM

Slalom is one of the most spectacular water sports, demanding skill, stamina and courage. The aim is to run a rapid river course marked by "gates" as fast as possible, and without touching.

It is performed in K1, C1 and C2. A "gate" is two poles, suspended over the water. Green and white gates are negotiated in a downstream direction, red and white gates upstream. The gates are placed so that you must make tricky cross-current moves and use the eddies and waves. A touch is penalized with 2 seconds added to the competitor's time. Missing a gate costs 50 seconds – and most likely wipeout in serious competition. Each competitor takes two runs, and the times are added together.

WILD WATER

Wild Water racing is more of endurance race though also on whitewater. It is comprised of a several kilometer racecourse where the competitor’s only goal is to have the quickest time to the finish line. Wild Water boats are longer than slalom boats and are difficult to stabilize when not moving. They do however track very well at high speeds, even in big water.

FREESTYLE

or frequently called "rodeo" is a fairly new discipline in kayaking. Over the past ten years, as the boats have been getting shorter, rodeos have become more and more frequent. A rodeo or freestyle event is held on either a wave or a hole where a paddler is able to stay for long enough time to perform moves for points. Many rodeos have different formats but at the World Championships, each rider get four runs of 30 seconds each and the rider’s three best rides are added to get his/her final score (for that round of competition). Points are awarded for things such as spins, loops, cartwheels, aerial blunts, shuvits etc. each being awarded a certain amount of points depending on difficulty and execution. Depending on the number of competitors, competitions may have a preliminary, quarterfinal, semi-final, and final to determine a winner.
