FREESTYLE INFORMATION
Freestyle, or frequently called rodeo is a fairly new discipline in kayaking. Over the past ten years, as the boats have been getting shorter, rodeos have become more and more frequent. A rodeo or freestyle event is held on either a wave or a hole where a paddler is able to stay for long enough time to perform moves for points. Many rodeos have different formats but at the World Championships, each rider get four runs of 30 seconds each and the rider’s three best rides are added to get his/her final score (for that round of competition). Points are awarded for things such as spins, loops, cartwheels, aerial blunts, shuvits etc. each being awarded a certain amount of points depending on difficulty and execution. Depending on the number of competitors, competitions may have a preliminary, quarterfinal, semi-final, and final to determine a winner.
